The Estrada Real (Royal Route) is located in Minas Gerais, a southeastern state of Brazil. During most of the 17th and 18th centuries, the gold explored in the interior lands was the main economic activity of Colonial Brazil. The gold went from Vila Rica do Ouro Petro (Rich Village of Black Gold) to Paraty in Rio de Janeiro state. The path that connected these two cities is known as The Royal Route. Nowadays, The Route is composed by many roads that bring together a number of charming colonial cities, with baroque architecture that remains from the golden times. These cities are hidden treasures of the interior of Brazil. Going through the Royal Route is like traveling three hundred years back in time.
